Do you feel “stuck” in your current strength training program? Feeling “stuck” or feeling as if you are making no forward progress is common to all who lift weights. It simply means you reached a training plateau. Plateaus occur when strength training programs follow the same pattern for extended periods of time.
Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you are experiencing a training plateau:
- Have I been performing the same exercises, in the same order for more than 12 weeks?
- Have I been performing the same amount of repetitions, for each exercise for more than 12 weeks?
- Has the amount of weight I have been lifting, for each exercise remained the same for more than 12 weeks?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, your strength training program is due for an update.
Simple modifications to your strength training program can push you past the plateau. Potential changes include switching the sequence of exercises, choosing new exercises, increasing or decreasing repetitions, and/or adjusting the amount of weight lifted for each exercise.
